Catholics across the Philippines are marking Black Saturday with the Easter Vigil, the liturgy that celebrates Christ’s resurrection and the victory of light over darkness. Rappler reported that Cardinal Jose Advincula, the archbishop of Manila, is leading the vigil at the Manila Cathedral at 8 p.m. on April 4.

The Easter Vigil is considered the Church’s most important liturgy of the year. Hindi lang ito ordinaryong misa — it is the moment when the faithful move from the sorrow of Holy Week to the hope of Easter, with ceremonies that highlight renewal, faith, and the return of light.

Among the key parts of the liturgy are the blessing of fire and the blessing of water. In many churches, the celebration also includes the baptism of adult converts, making the night especially meaningful for those formally entering the Catholic faith.

For Filipino families who have spent the past days in prayer, fasting, processions, and church visits, the vigil serves as the emotional turning point of the season. It is the point where mourning gives way to hope, and where the Church publicly remembers the resurrection at the heart of the Christian story.

With Manila Cathedral once again serving as a focal point for one of the country’s biggest religious observances, many faithful are expected to tune in or attend as Black Saturday closes. Sa dami ng solemn Holy Week moments this week, this is the one that signals the celebration is finally about to begin.
