With the Holy Week exodus getting closer, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board has started stricter inspections of buses and public utility vehicles across the country. The move is meant to catch safety problems early before millions of passengers begin heading to the provinces.

LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza II ordered all regional directors to carry out a nationwide roadworthiness inspection protocol. He also said the agency is coordinating with local government units and law enforcement teams so the checks do not stay limited to paper compliance only.

Mendoza said the focus is both on vehicle condition and driver readiness, including whether drivers are physically and mentally prepared for the long holiday travel period. The agency expects heavier road use as people travel for religious activities, vacations, and family trips.

The crackdown also covers terminals, not just vehicles. The report said LTFRB had already intensified inspections after complaints about poor terminal conditions, and that hundreds of operators have received show-cause orders or notices of violation, while some facilities were temporarily closed over serious safety breaches.

For commuters, the message is simple: the government wants safer rides and better terminal conditions before the rush fully starts. Kung maayos ang enforcement, this should mean fewer risky units on the road and less hassle for passengers during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
