Metro Manila motorists are getting a little more breathing room, at least on this stretch. The MMDA said it will keep its new traffic management scheme at the Quezon Avenue-Araneta Avenue intersection after a dry run showed faster travel times and better average speeds in the area.

According to the agency, northbound travel time on C-3 Road between Maria Clara Street and Kaliraya Street dropped from 8 minutes and 21 seconds on January 21 to 4 minutes and 42 seconds on March 11. Average speed on that segment also improved sharply, rising from 6.41 kph to 11.39 kph.

Sa southbound side, the gains were even bigger. Travel time fell from 7 minutes and 29 seconds to just 3 minutes and 1 second, while average speed jumped from 7.15 kph to 17.71 kph, based on MMDA figures cited in the report.

The agency also logged smoother movement along Quezon Avenue between Scout Chuatoco and Banawe Street. Westbound travel time went down from 4 minutes and 19 seconds to 2 minutes and 19 seconds, while eastbound speed nearly doubled as travel time dropped to 1 minute and 38 seconds.

Because of those results, the MMDA said it wants to continue and refine the scheme, including turning rules, road markings, and signages. If the improvements hold, puwede pa itong maging template for other major intersections in Metro Manila.
