Bagyo Alert! Tropical Storm Nuri Powers Up East of the Philippines
PAGASA just raised the alarm — what was a tropical depression lurking outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) has now intensified into Tropical Storm Nuri as of 2 a.m. Wednesday, March 11.
The storm was spotted approximately 1,290 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h and moving slowly in a southwestward direction. While it's still outside PAR, PAGASA is closely monitoring its movement and potential impact on the country.
The trough of Tropical Storm Nuri is already making its presence felt in parts of Mindanao. Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Davao Oriental can expect cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms. Meanwhile, the Northeast Monsoon continues to affect Luzon and Visayas.
For Metro Manila residents, expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains due to the amihan. Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, and Aurora will see more cloud cover with light rains. The rest of Mindanao will experience isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms from localized weather disturbances.
With the storm season picking up earlier than usual this year, PAGASA is urging the public, especially those in eastern Mindanao, to stay updated on weather bulletins. Fishermen and those with outdoor plans should monitor developments closely as Nuri continues its approach toward the archipelago.
