Bagong Hinga for PH Power: Malampaya Scores Bigger Gas Hit During Energy Crunch
The Philippines got a major energy boost on Thursday after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced a fresh gas discovery at the Camago-3 well in the Malampaya gas field off Palawan.
According to the report, Camago-3 can produce as much as 60 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. Marcos said the well is part of the $893-million Malampaya Phase 4 campaign backed by Enrique Razon and partners, and that it is much bigger than the earlier Malampaya East 1 find.
The President said Camago-3 is estimated to hold around 2.5 times more recoverable gas than Malampaya East 1. Taken together, the two new finds could extend the life of the Malampaya field by about six years, which is a big deal habang kabado ang market over fuel supply.
Marcos also stressed the potential savings in power generation. He said Malampaya gas costs about P4.80 per kilowatt hour, far below the roughly P10.30 per kilowatt hour cost of imported liquefied natural gas, making the discovery important for steadier and cheaper electricity.
The government is targeting first gas delivery from the new discovery by the fourth quarter of 2026, with another well called Bagong Pag-asa already in the pipeline. The announcement came as the country deals with a national energy emergency linked to the Middle East conflict and rising global fuel prices.
