Motorists and transport operators are bracing for another painful hit to the budget as pump prices are expected to jump sharply on Tuesday, April 7. Based on four days of trading under the Mean of Platts Singapore, diesel may rise by around ₱17 to ₱19 per liter, while gasoline could increase by about ₱3 to ₱5 per liter.

If the projected increase is implemented in full, retail diesel prices could reach roughly ₱166 per liter, nearing the ₱170 level, while gasoline may land around ₱120 per liter. That would place fresh pressure on commuters, delivery riders, bus and jeepney operators, and families already dealing with expensive daily essentials.

According to the Manila Bulletin report, the surge is being driven by renewed volatility in global oil markets as geopolitical tension in the Middle East continues to shake energy prices. A brief sense of relief earlier in the week faded after new signals of possible military escalation brought risk premiums back into the market.

Industry observers also said regional supply remains tight, helping keep both diesel and gasoline prices elevated. Because the Philippines imports fuel, the impact goes beyond service stations, with higher transport costs likely to spill into delivery fees, fare hike petitions, and the prices of basic goods.

With the next round of increases looming, many are watching whether the government will extend targeted assistance to the transport sector and other badly hit groups. For ordinary Filipinos, this is more than a fuel story, it is another warning that rising global tensions can quickly become dagdag-gastos at home.
