The International Criminal Court’s Appeals Chamber is set to hand down its judgment on April 22 on former president Rodrigo Duterte’s challenge to the tribunal’s jurisdiction over the drug war case. That means the long-running legal fight is heading into another make-or-break moment, and oo, this one is a big deal.

The Manila Times reported that the five-judge panel announced the schedule in an April 2 order, with the ruling to be delivered in open court at 11 a.m. Duterte is trying to reverse the Oct. 23, 2025 decision of ICC Pre-Trial Chamber I, which had rejected his argument that the court has no authority to hear the case.

The ICC investigation covers killings linked to the anti-drug campaign from 2011 to 2019, spanning Duterte’s time as Davao City mayor and later as president. The case centers on allegations that thousands of suspected drug users and dealers were killed in operations involving state forces and vigilantes.

Even though the Philippines formally withdrew from the ICC in March 2019, the court has maintained that it can still investigate alleged crimes committed while the country was still a member of the Rome Statute. Iyan ang core legal issue behind the appeal now pending before the chamber.

The April 22 judgment is expected to determine whether the case moves closer to trial or gets knocked out on jurisdictional grounds. Either way, the ruling will shape the next chapter of one of the most politically explosive cases tied to Duterte’s presidency.
