Another Yulo Makes Headlines: Karl Eldrew Snags Gold at Gymnastics World Cup in Turkey
Move over, Kuya Carlos — there's another Yulo making waves on the world gymnastics stage. Karl Eldrew Yulo, the 18-year-old younger brother of Olympic champion Carlos Yulo, just won his first-ever gold medal in the seniors division at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Series in Antalya, Turkey.
Karl dominated the floor exercise event on Saturday night, racking up an impressive 14.100 points — 5.300 in difficulty and 8.800 in execution. The 4-foot-11 gymnast dazzled the Turkish crowd with his powerful tumbling runs and stuck landings, outscoring Ireland's Eamon Montgomery (13.833) and Spain's Rayderley Zapata (13.333).
The younger Yulo qualified fourth with a 13.666 in the preliminaries, but turned it up several notches when it mattered. After seeing his score flash on the screen, he stood up, raised his hand in celebration, and blew flying kisses to the adoring crowd. Ang galing talaga.
Karl has competed in just two senior-level tournaments so far and has already reached three final rounds. Last week in the Baku leg in Azerbaijan, he made the finals in floor exercise and horizontal bar but couldn't quite reach the podium. This time in Antalya, though? Straight to the top.
The Gymnastics Association of the Philippines celebrated the win on Facebook, posting a photo of Karl with coach Reyland Capellan and GAP chief Cynthia Carrion with the caption: "The power trio got the gold!" Karl is expected to compete next at the Cairo, Egypt leg of the World Cup series from April 3 to 6. Keep an eye on this kid.
