Alex Eala Survives 3-Hour Thriller at Miami Open, Advances to Round of 32
Pinay tennis star Alex Eala is through to the next round of the 2026 Miami Open after gutting out a grueling three-hour battle against Germany's Laura Siegemund. The 20-year-old world No. 29, seeded 31st in the tournament, won 6(6)–7, 6–3, 6–3 in a match that had fans on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
Eala came out swinging, racing to a 3–0 lead in the first set. But the experienced Siegemund, 38, dug in deep with a marathon fourth game that lasted over 10 minutes and flipped the momentum. The German leveled things at 3-all and eventually forced a tiebreak, where she saved set point before stealing the opener with a serve jammed into Eala's body.
Down a set, Eala showed exactly why she's one of the sport's rising stars. She broke Siegemund early in the second set and rode that advantage to take it 6–3 and force a decider. The third set was classic back-and-forth tennis — Eala broke early, got broken back, then broke again after needing four chances to convert.
Serving for the match at 5–3, Eala had to hold her nerve as Siegemund saved two match points in the previous game to force one more hold. But Eala closed it out on her own serve, punching her ticket to the round of 32. Next up? The winner of Magda Linette vs. Iga Swiatek — yes, potentially the former world No. 1. Grabe ang laban!
Eala's Miami Open journey has been nothing short of inspirational. Last year, she made a historic semifinal run here that launched her into the global spotlight, earning an Asian Games gold medal along the way. Now she's back and proving she belongs among the best in the world. Laban, Alex! 🎾🇵🇭
