Filipino tennis star Alex Eala slipped to No. 45 in the latest Women’s Tennis Association rankings, ending a short stay at her career-best No. 29. The drop came after her round-of-16 finish at the Miami Open, where she bowed out to Karolina Muchova in straight sets, 0-6, 2-6.

The ranking fall looks harsh, but the explanation is pretty simple. Eala earned 120 points for this year’s Miami run, which was not enough to match the 390 points she had to defend from her breakthrough semifinal campaign in the same tournament last year.

That points swing pulled her total down from 1,525 to 1,255, allowing a number of players to move ahead of her in the standings. The report noted that her 16-place slide was the biggest drop in this ranking update, but it also pointed out that the situation is far from panic mode.

Eala now shifts to clay, where she has a clean chance to rebuild. She is set to play the Linz Open in Austria from April 6 to 12, and because she did not compete during that same week last year, any points she earns there will count as a net gain. A semifinal run alone could already push her back near top-30 territory.

After Linz, she is also lined up for Stuttgart qualifiers and the Madrid Open main draw, so may runway pa for a strong response. For Filipino fans, the ranking dip is real, but so is the opportunity for a quick comeback if her clay stretch clicks.
