Filipino tennis star Alex Eala is gearing up for one of the biggest tournaments of her young career at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells — often called the "fifth Grand Slam" — where she's earned a first-round bye as the 31st seed, a reflection of her career-high world ranking.

The 20-year-old Filipina will open her campaign in the Round of 64 against either China's Shuai Zhang (No. 62) or Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska (No. 52). But the real drama lies in what could come next — a potential Round of 32 rematch with world No. 4 Coco Gauff, her former doubles partner who demolished her 6-0, 6-2 in the Dubai quarterfinals just weeks ago.

Eala's draw is stacked, to say the least. Also lurking in her quarter are Jasmine Paolini, Linda Noskova, and former Indian Wells champions Paula Badosa and Bianca Andreescu. The first quarter is headlined by world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, while defending champion Mirra Andreeva sits in the fourth quarter alongside No. 2 Iga Swiatek.

The stakes are high for Eala beyond just the tournament itself. Her breakthrough 390-point haul from last year's semifinal run at the Miami Open is about to drop off the 52-week ranking cycle, making a deep run at Indian Wells critical to protecting her Top 32 standing. The Miami Open starts March 15 as the second leg of the prestigious "Sunshine Doubles."

This marks Eala's seventh tournament of 2026, and her third at the WTA 1000 level. After campaigns in Dubai, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, the Philippine Women's Open, the Australian Open, and the ASB Classic, the Filipina ace is showing she belongs among the world's elite. Whether or not she gets her Gauff rematch, Indian Wells is a chance to prove that Dubai was just a bad day — not a ceiling.
