Alex Eala opened her Miami Open campaign with a serious grind, surviving a three-hour, 20-minute battle against Germany's Laura Siegemund to move on to the round of 32.

Rappler reported that the 20-year-old Filipina pulled off a 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-3 win after watching the first set slip away despite leading multiple times. Even after that collapse, Eala stayed composed and broke Siegemund early in both the second and third sets to take control.

The match became the longest WTA Tour contest of Eala's career so far, but she said the physical work she put in over the past year helped her survive the test. Her quote after the win was confident and light, saying she still felt 'fresh as a flower' despite the demanding match.

This latest victory also shows how far Eala has come since her breakout run in Miami in 2025, when she stunned major champions and reached the semifinals as a wild card. She now came in as the tournament's 31st seed and again found herself in the third round of a WTA 1000 event that changed her career trajectory.

A possible rematch with world No. 3 Iga Swiatek is now in view depending on the next result, giving Filipino tennis fans another reason to stay locked in. Source: https://www.rappler.com/people/athletes/tennis-alex-eala-laura-siegemund-miami-open-march-19-2026/
