Alex Eala Gets First-Round Bye at Indian Wells — She's Officially Among the Top Seeds
Filipino tennis pride Alex Eala just keeps leveling up. The 20-year-old has earned a first-round bye at the prestigious Indian Wells Open (BNP Paribas Open), one of the biggest WTA 1000 tournaments outside the four Grand Slams. The tournament runs from March 4 to 15 in California, and Eala is in as one of the 32 seeded players.
This comes on the heels of Eala climbing to a career-high World No. 31 ranking on February 23, after her impressive run to the quarterfinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships. In Dubai, she did something she'd never done before in 2026 — she beat a top-10 player, sweeping World No. 7 Jasmine Paolini of Italy in straight sets during the round of 32.
Her Dubai run only ended when she faced two-time Grand Slam champion and World No. 4 Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals. It was a straight-sets loss, but the experience of battling elite players is exactly what Eala needs as she enters Indian Wells with serious momentum.
The Indian Wells field is absolutely stacked. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka hopes to finally win the title after runner-up finishes in 2023 and 2025. World No. 2 Iga Swiatek is going for her third Indian Wells crown. Russia's Mirra Andreeva returns to defend her title. All top-10 players will see action — and Eala is right there competing with them.
For Pinoy fans, this is a proud moment na talaga. Indian Wells is the first event of the "Sunshine Double" that includes the Miami Open — the same tournament where Eala rose to fame last year by making the semifinals and beating the likes of Swiatek, Madison Keys, and Jelena Ostapenko. If she can replicate that magic, expect her ranking to climb even higher.
