'24 Oras' Wins Best News Program at the First-Ever PAFTA — Mel Tiangco Thanks Kapuso Viewers on Air

GMA Network's flagship newscast '24 Oras' has bagged Best News Program at the inaugural Philippine Arts, Film, and Television Awards (PAFTA), organized by the Philippine Academy of Film and Television Arts. The recognition adds to the program's growing collection of accolades this year.

Kapuso news anchor Mel Tiangco announced the win on-air during Friday's edition of '24 Oras,' thanking the award-giving body and the network's loyal viewers. "Gusto naming magpasalamat sa PAFTA sa pagkilalang ito sa '24 Oras' bilang Best News Program. Salamat po, mga Kapuso," she said.

It wasn't just '24 Oras' that shone at the awards — Kapuso actress Marian Rivera also took home Best Actress of the Year at PAFTA for her role as Teacher Emmy in the film 'Balota.' The GMA Network had a strong showing across categories at the inaugural ceremony.

This is actually the second major award for '24 Oras' in 2026. Earlier this year, the newscast was also hailed as Best TV News Program at Trinity University Asia's Platinum Stallion National Media Awards. Consistent ang recognition — and for a program that's been a staple of Filipino evenings for decades, it's well-deserved.

PAFTA is a new award-giving body in the Philippine entertainment industry, aiming to recognize excellence in film and television. For '24 Oras' to win in the very first edition speaks to the program's enduring credibility and influence in Philippine broadcast journalism.
