A fresh diesel shipment reached Luzon this week, pero ayon sa Rappler’s breakdown, the much-publicized 142,000 barrels are not enough to cover even one full day of Philippine diesel demand based on 2024 government consumption data.

The Department of Energy said the delivery forms part of the government’s Emergency Energy Security Program, with Energy Secretary Sharon Garin calling it the first of more expected deliveries. The agency also said state firms helped negotiate for up to 1 million barrels of oil as officials try to shore up supply during the Middle East-driven fuel crunch.

But the numbers in the same report show why the arrival did not fully calm concerns. DOE data cited by Rappler put average diesel demand at about 201,927 barrels per day in 2024, which means the newly arrived volume falls short of one day’s needs. For total petroleum demand, the country uses more than 500,000 barrels per day, so even 1 million barrels would only go a short way.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. later said crude oil supply could last until June 30 after talks with Petron’s Ramon Ang. Rappler noted, however, that this longer runway appears tied to Petron’s own supply position rather than the entire country’s total fuel requirement, an important distinction habang naghahanap pa ng additional imports ang industry players.

The bigger picture: the shipment is still a real addition, but not the game-changing fix some people may have assumed from the headline alone. With supply uncertainty after April still hanging over the market, the pressure stays on government and oil firms to secure more fuel fast.
