100 Women March to Ombudsman to File Charges Against Rep. Suntay Over Anne Curtis Remarks
It's Women's Month, but Rep. Bong Suntay apparently didn't get the memo. Around 100 women's rights advocates marched to the Office of the Ombudsman on Friday, March 6, to file criminal and administrative complaints against the Quezon City 4th District congressman for his lewd remarks about actress Anne Curtis during the House impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Nine complainants from groups including the World March of Women (WMW)-Pilipinas and Sentro ng mga Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggagawa-Women accused Suntay of violating the Safe Spaces Act (RA 11313), the Magna Carta of Women (RA 9710), the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials (RA 6713), and the Code of Professional Responsibility for lawyers. That's four laws in one complaint — hindi biro 'yun.
Suntay landed in hot water after suggesting during the March 3 House hearing that he had a sexual fantasy about Curtis. He later claimed it was just an "analogy" to defend Sara Duterte's threat to kill President Marcos, but lawmakers, celebrities, and ordinary Filipinos weren't buying it. WMW-Pilipinas national coordinator Jean Enriquez was blunt: "Hindi po sapat ang apology. Hindi po sapat na tinanggal sa records ng Congress itong mga sinabi niya."
Even Suntay's own wife, Sheila Guevara, publicly distanced herself from his remarks, saying in a Facebook post: "My children and I do not agree with, and we do not condone, the analogy made by Bong." She directly apologized to Curtis and her family, acknowledging that "no woman should ever be spoken about that way."
The Ombudsman complaint adds to a growing pile of trouble for the congressman. Gabriela Women's Party and Kilusan ng Manggagawang Kababaihan already filed a separate ethics complaint at the House of Representatives, and the chamber has authorized its ethics committee to investigate. Suntay might want to start lawyering up — because the women of the Philippines clearly aren't done with him yet.
