Metro Manila mayors push to postpone voter registration

Mayors of Metro Manila are now pushing to postpone voter registration within their jurisdiction up to next year to minimize the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (Covid-19) within their jurisdictions. 

However, the Commission on Election (Comelec) opposed the recommendation since it could lead to more people lining up in its office during the shortened registration period.

In an online briefing on Tuesday, Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said the Metro Manila Council (MMC) appealed to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the management of emerging infectious (IATF) to defer the registration period until Jan. 2021 or until it is placed under modified general community quarantine (MGCQ).

“This is subject to the IATF approval,” Roque said. 

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said they are not keen on the recommendation since the voter registration was already suspended for six months because of community quarantine in the National Capital Region (NCR).
