Governments urged to allow free flow of food trade amid Covid-19 pandemic

The World Trade Organization (WTO), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have called on governments to allow free flow of food to minimize the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

In a joint news statement issued on Tuesday, WTO Director General Roberto Azevedo, FAO Director General Qu Dongyu and WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said it’s important to keep borders open for food trade, even as countries move to arrest the rising number of Covid-19 cases worldwide.

“When acting to protect the health and well-being of their citizens, countries should ensure that any trade-related measures do not disrupt the food supply chain,” they said.
