President Duterte just raised the minimum qualifications for politicians who will be seeking his endorsement in the next presidential election in May 2022.
Duterte, speaking at an event in Malacanang on Tuesday (March 3), said only those who are willing to kill and be killed for the sake of the country have the right to succeed him in 2022.
The President stressed: “Sa totoo lang presidente, ka at hindi ka marunong pumatay at takot ka pumatay, eh wag ka na maging presidente. Walang mangyayari sa bayan kung puro utos ka lang.”
Because of this, Duterte said he is starting to doubt that someone has these qualifications among the current breed of politicians in the country.
“We’re getting old and the young are there. Wala pa akong nakitang new crop of politicians dito sa ating bayan. Frankly, wala akong nakita na pwede talagang maging presidente,” the Chief Executive said.
Duterte is known globally for his bloody war against illegal drugs, his flagship program and top campaign promise. He has repeatedly threatened to eliminate drug pushers, which was often realized owing to the thousands of drug peddlers that were killed during police operations. There were also rumors that Duterte has his own death squad that liquidates drug pushers.
“Ikaw na ang gumawa para ikaw talaga ang bida,” Duterte said.
This does not mean that Duterte also does not see his daughter, Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio, as a worthy successor. This is because Duterte has been saying he does not want her daughter to run for president.
Despite this, experts are saying that Sara will most likely succeed her father if she opts to run for president in 2022.
