News about the secret wedding of Sarah Geronimo and Matteo Guidicelli on Thursday night (February 20) trended on social media on Friday, with netizens congratulating the singer-actress for finally having the opportunity to break free from her mother Divine.

But what would have been a purely romantic day for the couple was rocked with controversy, particularly after it was reported that Matteo punched on the neck a bodyguard hired by Sarah’s family for informing Divine of their secret wedding.

The incident was reported by the bodyguard, Terry Tamara, to the police precinct that has jurisdiction over the Bonifacio Global City, where the wedding happened.

The ceremony was kept under wraps despite rumors already circulating that the two were to be married on Thursday. Sarah even attended the taping of her show at the ABS-CBN studio that day.

@chasacar commented on Twitter: “But I can’t help but be amazed with Sarah. Imagine, going to work all day long and making people believe that all is well then suddenly, late at night, she has a wedding ceremony to catch up on? You got skills ghourl!”

Sarah and Matteo have been on a relationship for six years already, and they announced their engagement last November.

There was a time on Friday when the top Trending in Philippines topics on Twitter were all about the Sarah-Matteo wedding. Netizens tweeted about the topics “Mommy Divine”, “Mrs. Guidicelli”, “Sarah”, “The Buzz”, and “Ricky”. For several hours on Friday, the trending topics on Twitter had nothing to do with the coronavirus or Philippine politics and controversies.

Entertainment Columnist Ricky Lo had a scoop about the wedding, and some criticized him for again sticking his nose on a “private matter”. But some also congratulated him for getting the exclusive story from an unknown source.
