CHR denounces North Cotabato ambush

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has denounced the ambush killing of two off-duty soldiers in Midsayap, North Cotabato by two unidentified gunmen riding in tandem.

The victims are both from the 34th Infantry Battalion. They are Private First Class Maljay Bernal, who died on the spot, and Corporal Earl Tabaranza, who remains critically injured.

The police and army officials believe the perpetrators are members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF).

“The arbitrary attack against soldiers who were not engaged in combat is a direct violation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL),” CHR Spokesperson Jacqueline Ann de Guia said in a statement.
