Duterte to DOJ: Come up with ‘integrated solution’ to ‘onerous’ water deals provisions

Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra on Thursday said President Duterte has asked the Department of Justice (DOJ) to come up “with an integrated solution” to several onerous provisions in the 1997 contracts with water distributors.

Guevarra said that while the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) was contemplating on “judicial remedies here and abroad, some Cabinet members want an overhaul of the existing concession agreements.”

“Others (Cabinet members) are thinking of more drastic actions,” he said.

But in a radio interview Thursday morning, Guevarra said “the government is more interested in getting a new deal than in compromising the arbitral awards.”
