BUTUAN CITY – As the world celebrates International Men’s Day (IMD) on Tuesday (Nov. 19), the Commission on Population in Caraga Region (POPCOM-13) highlighted a series of activities to recognize the role of men in the population program of the government.
POPCOM-13 on Tuesday facilitated a Caravan in Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur, where more than 300 residents from different barangays received modern family planning services.
Carlo Becera, the Information, Education, Communication, and Promotions Coordinator of POPCOM-13, told Philippine News Agency that a separate provision of free services was also facilitated in Patin-ay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.
During the activities, Becera said residents were able to avail of free Bilateral Tubal Ligation (BTL) and Non-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) for men.
He added that in line with the IMD celebration, male participants during the activity in Bayugan City were given separate sessions and discussion under the KATROPA advocacy of POPCOM-13.
KATROPA stands for Kalalakihang Tumutugon sa Responsibilidad at Obligasyon sa Pamilya.
The KATROPA session, Becera said, was intended to educate men on the provisions of modern family planning by the government, particularly vasectomy.
Men, he added, must understand that vasectomy is an effective birth control method and that talks about its negative effects have no medical proofs.
He said that myths and misconceptions on vasectomy continue to discourage men from undergoing its procedure.
The KATROPA session was led by POPCOM-13 Regional Director Alexander Makinano, who emphasized that men play an important role to promote the welfare of his family through family planning.
Makinano also urged men to regularly communicate with their wives on fertility matters.
He also recognized the role of men in the promotion of the family planning program of the government, particularly in the Caraga Region. (PNA)
